Familial adenomatous polyposis

Familial adenomatous polyposis is a non-contagious and rare hereditary disease. It is defined by polyps’ proliferation and attacks mainly the colon and rectum.

Physical manifestations:

  • Bone tumors that may appear on the face

  • Cysts under the skin that may be revealed on any part of the body (face, trunk, legs, etc.) as early as age 13

  • Papillary carcinoma of the thyroid

  • Retina injury that displays as small black spots

  • Stomach and duodenum polyps (may become cancerous)

 

Treatments:

  • Colectomy with ileo-rectal anastomosis

  • Colectomy with resection of the rectum (total-procto colectomy)

Coloprotectomy with ileostomy
