Familial adenomatous polyposis
Familial adenomatous polyposis is a non-contagious and rare hereditary disease. It is defined by polyps’ proliferation and attacks mainly the colon and rectum.
Physical manifestations:
Bone tumors that may appear on the face
Cysts under the skin that may be revealed on any part of the body (face, trunk, legs, etc.) as early as age 13
Papillary carcinoma of the thyroid
Retina injury that displays as small black spots
Stomach and duodenum polyps (may become cancerous)
Treatments:
Colectomy with ileo-rectal anastomosis
Colectomy with resection of the rectum (total-procto colectomy)
Coloprotectomy with ileostomy
