Hygiene and care

Whether it is a colostomy, an ileostomy or a urostomy, hygiene remains simple. There is one thing that you need to be careful with and it is not to irritate the skin around your stoma when unnecessary. Just follow some rules precautions.

First, you need to know that your ostomy is insensitive but that it can bleed easily. It is therefore important not to rub, but to stamp it. You will have a stoma wash when you change equipment. Remember that your ostomy is a part of you, so a shower can do as much good as it does to you. Spilling water on your skin surrounding the stoma regenerates dead skin and offers great relief. After the shower, put a handkerchief above your stoma to avoid leaks and to let your skin dry before you install your new equipment to prevent fungi.

So before removing your equipment you need to prepare your equipment.

Materials needed:

• Mild soap (do not use liquid soap or scented soap)

• Non-sterile compresses or handkerchiefs

• Plastic bag or a garbage can

• Scissors

• Small sponge or small towels or fragrance free wet towels

• The new equipment

• The protective support blueprint (if it is not pre-cut)
