Prostate cancer

Prostate cancer develops in the cells of the prostate, a gland in the male reproductive system. It is the most common type of cancer among men in Canada. Generally, prostate cancer develops slowly and can often be cured or treated successfully if diagnosed early in its development.

Symptoms:

  • Bone pain

  • Difficulty having an erection

  • Difficulty urinating

  • Presence of blood in the urine or semen

  • Urinary flow restricted

Risk Factors:

  • Age

  • Diet

  • Ethnic factors

  • Inheritance

  • Physical activity, body weight and lack of physical activity

  • Sex hormones ratio

  • Vasectomy medical history

Tests for diagnosing:

  • Digital rectal exam

  • PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) level

The only way to establish a formal diagnosis is by conducting a biopsy.

Treatments:

  • Chemotherapy

  • Cryotherapy

  • Hormonal therapy

  • Radiotherapy / brachytherapy

  • Surgery (prostatectomy)
